Skin Deep The Next Chapter

July 30th, 2019

Skin Deep Opens its Academy just in time for its 4th Birthday. Jody Taylor explains her journey in the industry

I started my Beauty Therapy qualifications in 1996 not quite sure what to do for a ‘career’ or even if I wanted a career. I wanted to do something that I really enjoyed but the restrictive feeling of a having a career didn’t exactly fill me with joy, but well aware I would not enjoy working at a desk or a routine 9-5.  I knew then I wanted to work for myself but I wasn’t sure how this was achievable, still the thought was there from the start. My tutor Vanessa asked our group what we would like to do once we qualified, I said I like to have large premises and upstairs I will open a nightclub for weekends and in the week in the premises below run a beauty salon!!!! Ha-ha the mentality of a sixteen-year-old………but really that’s still a great idea!!!

I surprised myself in the first few weeks at college after the initial shock that I had writing to do!! I found I thoroughly enjoyed the theory side of the course and in some instances more than certain treatments, nails have never been my thing. I enjoyed learning about the products the ingredients and how they worked I found the electrical facial treatments in Level 3 much more enjoyable to carry out than traditional holistic facials.  Electrical facials the results achieved and the science behind the modalities really floated my boat.

After a few ‘jobs’ in the industry I became a bit disheartened with the whole therapist idea working long hours, little breaks ,low pay, non-existent commissions and no development programmes it wasn’t really what I wanted to be doing for my ‘job’ I had a brief change of direction and began working within a health club this lasted a few months, from here an opportunity arose to take over a beauty salon and I jumped at the chance didn’t really think about how I would achieve this or more importantly pay for it, and began making plans. I didn’t tell anyone I didn’t want any negativity I just did it rather naively at twenty-one, but what a joyful learning curve it’s been.

I have never looked back and I have taken every course or development opportunity available to me that I could afford in what interested me the most, The Skin. When you work for yourself the advantage is always you are your own master!! Lone working isn’t for everyone but I have always thoroughly enjoyed the freedom this brings, I definitely prefer my own stress and targets not someone else’s.

I had previously sold my last salon in April 2011 to relocated to Plymouth after my wedding in August 2011. Soon after relocating my husband and I had an amazing surprise, I was pregnant, and we had our Son in November 2012. Feeling unsettled away from family and friends as a family we decided to move back to Doncaster leaving behind a lecturing position which I very much enjoyed.

In 2015 I decided the time was right for me to again open my own Skin Clinic I felt I had developed and gained the correct knowledge and experience over the years to be able to open a specific Skin Clinic I just wanted to do what I enjoyed the most. Skin Deep opened its doors in a quiet corner of Doncaster as a private facial only clinic with the goal to become a training centre for advanced treatments. At this time the industry qualifications had not caught up to the industry so patiently I have waited for the right opportunity and in January this year it felt right to achieve my end goal.

I am delighted that Skin-Deep Professional Academy will launch this year, hard work does pay off especially when your ‘job’ doesn’t feel like a job at all, I enjoy going to work and spending time with the wide and varied clients I see each week. I also enjoy my position as a trainer for Naturastudios I get to meet other professionals from all sectors of the industry. I am looking forward to the next chapter to train other likeminded industry professionals helping them to develop to be the best they can be and become great in business doing what they love. I intend to keep all course groups small only two per group to ensure 100% attention for both of the students.  I feel that both myself and the students will have a have different skill sets, backgrounds, goals and ambitions but training alongside like-minded professionals will create a supportive and attentive environment of learning and development.

Four years after beginning trading Skin Deep successfully becomes accredited training academy providing international and industry recognised VTCT qualifications in Level 4 advanced Beauty Therapy treatments 2019. What a great Birthday present for Skin Deep I am looking forward to what year five will bring.
